ASARCA Land Navigation Classroom and Field Exercise

Land Navigation Classroom and Field Exercise. This is an ASARCA 2 sign off.

LOCATION: Mesquite Airport Hanger.

TIME: 0800 to 1700

Class will start at 0800 at the Sheriff’s Office Training Room in Kingman. The maps for the class will be provided. You will need to bring your 24-hour pack.

Prerequisite for the Land Navigation Class:

Must bring the following equipment to the class:
1 – GPS Receiver (You can use your cell phone as a “GPS Receiver” instead of a traditional 1 2 – “GPS unit” – you need to know how to use it, as this class is not teaching GPS operation)
3 – Cell Phone with SARTopo (we accommodate those not voted into SAR just yet)
4 – Compass
5 – Straight edge (ruler)
6 – Pencil
7 – Notepad

Must be able to complete the following with your GPS PRIOR to class
1 – Turn on and off the GPS
2 – Check battery charge
3 – Change batteries
4 – Set map datum (make sure set to WGS-84)
5 – Set units for distance (up to you, most will use feet/miles)
6 – Set location type, such as UTM or Lat/Long (most will use Lat/Long)
7 – Set units for location coordinate readout (format most use is decimal degrees or DD)
8 – Clear tracks
9 – Turn track log on
10 – Turn track log off 

If you cannot complete these steps proficiently prior to the training, you may not complete the class. You are responsible for the operation of your personal GPS unit.

Upon completion of the classroom, a Land Navigation Evaluation can be attempted after two weeks (or later). Make arrangements when ready to attempt the evaluation with your training officer.
